Today’s multi-generational workforce has brought about a whole new dimension and dynamics to the workplace in which HR and business leaders need to recognize and proactively address. Studies show that skills gaps continue to widen with one study revealing that more than 50% of employers indicating they are unable to find qualified candidates. The post-global financial crisis economy is also seeing more individuals looking for greener pastures. Research shows that 86% of job seekers who are already employed are looking for work outside their current occupations; with many looking for their “dream job,” even if it meant they have to relocate.
There has also been a shift in traditional career paths. The number of individuals switching to freelancing work (both out of choice and out of necessity) has also increased. This is aligned with the shift by employers to employ more freelancers or contract staff as they can save on the provision of benefits. A recent study by shows that in the US alone, there are now 53 million freelancers, amounting to one-third of the American workforce. Almost 70% mentioned that technology and the Internet has made it easier for them to find freelance work. Seeing that technology is constantly improving, it is expected for these numbers to continue growing globally.
